Dryer vent cleaning is a crucial aspect of home maintenance that is often overlooked. Over time, neglected dryer vents can lead to longer drying times, higher energy bills, and wear-and-tear on your dryer.
More significantly, lint build-up in the dryer vent, a highly flammable material, can pose a serious fire hazard. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, there are nearly 3,000 home clothes dryer fires each year, resulting in an estimated $35 million in property loss, with failure to clean the dryer vent being the leading cause.
Regularly performing dryer vent cleaning, not only enhances the efficiency of your dryer, saving you time and money, but is also vital for the safety of your home and its occupants.
Is Your Drying Cycle Taking Too Long
If your clothes dryer is taking longer than usual to dry your laundry, a clogged dryer vent could be the culprit. Your dryer works by forcing hot air through a rotating drum containing your clothes.
This hot air evaporates the moisture in your clothes, and then this damp air gets expelled outside through the dryer vent. However, when a dryer vent is clogged with lint or other debris, the moist air is not efficiently expelled, and the moisture cannot leave the dryer as quickly. This leads to your dryer needing to run longer to fully dry your clothes.
Additionally, a clogged vent can lead to increased humidity inside the dryer, further prolonging drying times. Importantly, not only does a clogged dryer vent impact the efficiency of your dryer, it also poses a serious fire hazard due to the flammable nature of the accumulated lint. Regularly cleaning your dryer vent can help ensure your dryer operates efficiently and safely.

3,000+Fires a Year!
Dryer vent fires are unfortunately a common and dangerous issue that can occur when the vent of a clothes dryer gets blocked by lint over time. The lint can catch fire due to the intense heat generated by the dryer, leading to a serious risk for households. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, nearly 3,000 home clothes dryer fires are reported each year, causing an estimated $35 million in property loss. Furthermore, failure to clean the dryer is the leading cause of these fires.
Dryer fires often start with the ignition of lint, inside the dryer vent system, which is incredibly flammable. When a dryer vent is clogged, hot air gets trapped in the dryer, causing temperatures to rise to potentially dangerous levels. Once ignited, lint can cause a fire to spread quickly, leading to significant damage.

Having your dryer vents cleaned professionally is essential for the safety of your family and your home. Dryers cause 4% of all fires each year and 3% of home fire deaths and direct fire property damage. A proper cleaning of your lint filter after every use, should also be part of your regular cleaning schedule. Remember if there is a burning smell, shut off your dryer immediately and seek repair before using again.
Dryer Vent Cleaning Saves Lives!
Dryer Vent Location
The location of your dryer vent plays a critical role in the efficiency and safety of your dryer’s operation. Here’s why it matters:
Distance: The shorter the distance between the dryer (laundry room) and the outside of your home (exterior vent), the better. A shorter dryer vent duct run allows for more efficient exhausting of the damp air, thus the dryer works less, saving you on energy costs and reducing wear on the dryer.
Straight Path: The more turns or bends in the vent, the harder your dryer must work to expel the hot, moist air, reducing its efficiency and increasing the risk of lint buildup, which can pose a fire hazard.
Above Ground: The vent should always exit your home above ground to prevent blockages from outside debris or even snow.
Away from Windows and AC Units: The vent should be located away from windows and air conditioning units to avoid condensation on windows and prevent drawing the moist air back into the home.
Outdoor Venting: Always ensure that the dryer vent exits on an exterior wall to the outdoors and never into a garage, attic, or crawl space. Venting indoors can lead to humidity buildup, leading to potential mold growth and other moisture-related issues inside the house.
Proper Vent Cap: The vent cap on the exterior wall outlet of your home should have a flap or louvers to prevent pests from entering. It should not be screened, as screens can collect lint and lead to clogs.
In essence, the location of the dryer vent is crucial for the optimal performance of your dryer, energy efficiency, and, most importantly, the safety of your home and family. It’s always recommended to have your dryer installed and vented by a professional to ensure it meets all necessary guidelines and safety standards.
Professional Dryer Vent Cleaning Companies
The dryer vent cleaning process is more than just using a vacuum cleaner. Many homes have the dryer vent pipe running a significant distance. A simple household vacuum will not clean the entire dryer ducts. For this reason, it is important to have a professional dryer vent cleaning company perform this service once or twice a year.
STEP 1: The most important part before cleaning, is to do a dryer vent inspection. Make sure there are no breaks in the dryer vent trunklines. Any gaps will allow lint and debris to escape. Along with lint, moisture will leak out causing excess humidity to build up in your wall or ceiling cavity.
STEP 2: Disconnect the dryer vent ducting from the dryer. Then we setup a HEPA vacuum with a three-stage motor at one end. This creates negative pressure on the entire dyer vent trunkline.
STEP 3: While under vacuum, we will mechanically push the snake brush down the entire vent pipes, pushing all the lint towards the vacuum. It is likely this step will have to be done more than once.
STEP 4: Switch sides and clean the trunklines from the other direction. We also run the snake brush down after we reconnect the dryer vent tube and turn the clothes dryer on. This is to ensure the line is completely clean.

STEP 5: Finally, we check all the hose clamps are good and tight and make any repairs needed to the trunklines. We will clean the dryer lint trap too.
It is also important to add, that cleaning lint behind your dryer and in your laundry room is crucial to safe indoor air quality and preventing dryer fires.

Making sure that your dryer vents are properly maintained is important for your indoor air quality, extending your dryer life, and preventing a dryer fire.
How often should dryer vents be cleaned?
The National Fire Protection Agency suggests cleaning your dryer vents often. We suggest having them cleaned professionally at least once a year. If your dryer vent has a long run or several bends, we highly recommend cleaning it twice a year.
Signs it is Time to Clean the Dryer Vent
LONG DRY TIMES
Your clothing dryers are taking longer than normal to dry an average load. It is important to watch this as it will likely be the first sign you see.
LOW AIR FLOW
Check where the dryer vent exits your home while your dryer is running. You should feel a good amount of warm air coming out. If you don’t feel the air, it is time to have your dryer vent pipe cleaned.
CLOGGED EXTERIOR COVER
While you are outside, check the louvers and cover where your dryer vent comes out. It should be clean and clear from debris.

CLOGGED LINT TRAP
Check your dryer lint screen after every load of laundry. It should be cleaned of all lint and debris before starting a load of laundry to dry.
